South Padre by Any Other Name

2 04 2009

One of the phenomena on South Padre Island is it’s penchant for fouling up folks’ pronunciations and spellings.

Some of them are just oversights, like the constant references to “Mooncussers” as “Mooncrushers.”

Much of it has to do with foreign names. One of the restaurants on our meal plan is La Jaiba (Spanish for “The Crab”). Most of our staff (myself included) tend to call it “La Hy-E-Ba.” But the locals insist the restaurant is “La Hy-Ba.” Conversely, one of the most popular condo complexes on the island is Saida. But, in this case, the “I” is pronounced so that it’s spoken “Sy-E-Da.” (Though nearly all of the spring breakers call it “Sadey-Uh”).

Going the other way, the Spanish-speaking DJs on the island are constantly referring to Inertia Tours as “Interita Tours,” when talking on the mic during parties.

And before folks ever get down here, we get a lot of calls in the office from parents who want to know more before sending their kid off to spring break on “San Padre/San Pedro/South Padre/etc.”

Midnight Pancakes: An Alternative Spring Break

30 03 2009

In addition to the tens of thousands of college students that swarm South Padre Island each spring break, the island is also invaded by folks looking to both spread the gospel through creative ministries.

Primarily, this means offering free shuttles and free pancakes to college students rolling out of the bars and clubs.

While this could be a preachy nightmare for partiers and a night of unprovoked belligerence for the “Beach Reachers,” there’s actually a fair amount of rapport. Put simply, the pancake station outside Louie’s makes for a subdued afterhours spot for folks to regroup and fill up–which spring breakers love. And for the pancake makers, it’s probably a better way to engage peers than handing out literature or carrying a giant cross down the beach.

So, if you’re looking for an alternative way to spend spring break, spreading some cheer while getting some sun, this might be the ticket. Plus, since most of the work to be done takes place at night, it frees up the day for making a giant sand Jesus.

Partying by Day in South Padre

29 03 2009

While there are several megaclubs on in South Padre, by far the largest venue on South Padre is Coca Cola Beach. It actually changes names depending on who sponsors it. So, folks tend to think of it as Coca Cola Beach even on the years when it’s been Full Throttle Beach or Sprite Remix Beach.

Regardless, it’s located behind the ISLA GRAND BEACH RESORT–which has undergone a name change itself, since it was a Radisson last year. And its party stage attracts daily crowds between 12,000 and 18,000 at for games, drinking, a lot of banter about whose college is best, all competing with a 50,000 watt sound system.

More shrimp, but not for us.

19 03 2009

Per my earlier note, our meal plan is pretty badass. Unfortunately, our staff can’t usually eat it this week–since there’s so many people on the island and we’re swamped with work.

Adding insult to injury, one of our restaurants just doubled the amount of shrimp they give out with their meal giving the mountains of Chinese food I wrote about earlier a run for their money.

A: THOUSANDS!!!!

My favorite day on Spring Break in South Padre Island, Texas

14 10 2008

I would get up and take a shower, and roll down to Benny’s by the Bay Cafe, which is located at the Sea Ranch Marina on the southernmost tip of South Padre Island.

Benny is actually Walter (the Owner's) Golden Retriever

Benny is actually Walter (the Owner) its his Dog)

Once there, I’d go & get my self service coffee, then wander over & steal some of Walter’s fresh milk from the fridge for my java. I’d order 3 eggs over hard, double order of his ridiculously good bacon, and a large serving of his freshly made hashed browns (the best I’ve ever had). A slow breakfast and 3 or 4 cups of coffee would do the job.

Next, I’d stop by my friends Bryan’s office to say hello to everyone at Island Services, shooting the breeze for 20 to 30 minutes, eventually sauntering out to get back to the Inertia Tours office located at 1515 Padre Blvd by Club Chaos. Once there, I’d pretend like I was going to whack our Operations Vice President in the balls (he’d be on the phone) chuckle, then fire up email and get them all answered and probably take a few calls.

Eventually, I’d wander over to my brother’s shop http://www.paradisetowingcompany.com and see what’s going on with South Padre Island Towing these days. By this time, it’d be 1 p.m. and time for lunch. I would have put Bryan Pinkerton off until this late, then me, him, and Adam Hancock from VIP Rentals would cruise over to Pirate’s Landing to meet up with South Padre Island Mayor Robert Pinkerton. We’d eat lunch, Bob would ask for a full, huge glass of ice for his Iced Tea like he always does. Bryan & Adam would get soup and Po’ Boys, and I’d order some sort of fish. Bob Friedman the Owner would stop by, we’d chat with him, and soon off we’d go. Light Island Politics would follow and a general discussion of the economy.

After we finish up, I’d head to my condo on south padre across the Queen Isabella Causeway, and grab Miki my retarded little Pom dog and my girlfriend Austin

Miki the Masta!

Miki the Masta!

My lovely girlfriend Austin would come with also, but she’s not good at walking the dog, I’d have to take over:

Austin at the Mini Golf

Austin at the Mini Golf

We’d go for a walk down the beach about 2 miles each way to get our cardio done, then head back to get ready for kiteboarding lessons with http://www.airpadre.com with Jeff Hoxtell. I love to wakeboard, but in South Padre, the water is far too shallow in they bay.

Exhausted, we’d come back and get ready to go to Dinner at Kohnami for the Sushi Boat and some Sake bombs, and finally off to Louies Backyard for a drink before hitting the hay.

Sure, it wouldn’t have to be Spring Break in South Padre to do these things – but I would want it to be – Inertia Tours does it right! Check out my Company http://www.inertiatours.com to book, or call me 800 821 2176 and I’ll book your trip effortlessly for you and your group. My email is chad@inertiatours.com if you prefer

Why students go on College Spring Break Trips

24 09 2008

We like lists – they are fast, clean, & easy – and despite how controversial this topic might be – people go on spring break trips for (4) really significant reasons that we know of:

1.) For bragging rights & social prestige – rich, popular people travel. They get tan on a beautiful beaches. You could label this reason – “to get tan” This is why you see so many hotties tanning all day by the pool, and wearing some spring break souvenir tee shirt back the first day of school – they want everyone to know.

2.) For that one last “hurrah!” with their friends (girls in particular but boys too) – thing is – if you are a Senior in college, or have friends that are, they have went through alot of bullshit to earn a degree that might only produce a $30,000 per year income and get them $40,000 in debt from the State Governments’ college. They want to party really fucking hard their last year in school before they have to work at some menial job.

3.) To get really drunk, wasted, hammered, shitfaced, belligerent, or intoxicated. Spring Break has drinking games, beer pong, beer bongs, keys, Wap Punches, Jungle Juice parties, and the like. Yes, people don’t have to drive, they might not have to answer to a bitchy girlfriend or psycho boyfriend, and there are simply little to no rules. They take drinking to the next level.

4.) To experience sexual liberation. Yes, people go on spring break (girls want to “hook up” or at least “make out” one night with a new random boy) and guys go down to straight up get laid. The fact of the matter is, most people don’t bang on spring break. The popular media makes it sound like a dirty orgy, but it’s mostly drunk people kissing, their friends telling on them, or an occassional inappropriate display of dry humping on the dance floor after too many big ol’ drinks.

You’ve earn a bad ass trip for spring break. Inertia Tours http://www.inertiatours.com happens to specialize in superb road trips to South Padre Island, Texas that will be a trip that will create memories that will last a lifetime – we guarantee it Call us toll free 800.821.2176 to find out more, or email us: tripinfo@inertiatours.com
