Spring Break Airfare Price Drops by 12% vs. last year

27 08 2009

Our analysis of spring break airfare pricing from around 50 US departure cities to South Padre Island, Texas for spring break reveals that airfare has decreased in price approximately 12% on average. We feel that the safety of going on college spring break to Texas, combined with the travel deal that seems to exists points to the fact that South Padre Island should be one of the hottest spring break 2010 destinations this year.

The Three Nation Vacation

7 04 2009

Over the years, I’ve heard folks refer to South Padre as a “Two Nation Vacation,” since it’s about 40 minutes from the island to Matamoros, Mexico.

Accordingly, in the past, it was a cheap, easy compromise for folks who wanted to spend a little time south of the border–without flying all the way down to Cancun or Mazatlan.

This has changed in the last few years, as passport requirements have gotten stricter. One of the side effects is a more pronounced interest/influence of Texas on the island.

mechanical-bull

On the whole, the island has a unique feel as it’s distinctly tropical and laidback and has the atmosphere you’d expect from an island. But our closeness with Mexico is tangible, too. And Texans will be quick to remind you that Texas was a nation unto itself before merging with the U.S.

The point I’d like to make isn’t a sophisticated one–as there are loads of communities with overlapping influences. But there’s something about the fact that this takes place on an island, in particular, that sets South Padre apart both literally and figuratively.

The more things change…

4 04 2009

I found a picture of spring break in South Padre from back in 1988. My first impulse was to say that the only major change on the beach (other than the crowd size and corporate sponsorship) is the fashion, but with the resurgence of neon in the last couple years, even that’s debatable.

South Padre by Any Other Name

2 04 2009

One of the phenomena on South Padre Island is it’s penchant for fouling up folks’ pronunciations and spellings.

Some of them are just oversights, like the constant references to “Mooncussers” as “Mooncrushers.”

Much of it has to do with foreign names. One of the restaurants on our meal plan is La Jaiba (Spanish for “The Crab”). Most of our staff (myself included) tend to call it “La Hy-E-Ba.” But the locals insist the restaurant is “La Hy-Ba.” Conversely, one of the most popular condo complexes on the island is Saida. But, in this case, the “I” is pronounced so that it’s spoken “Sy-E-Da.” (Though nearly all of the spring breakers call it “Sadey-Uh”).

Going the other way, the Spanish-speaking DJs on the island are constantly referring to Inertia Tours as “Interita Tours,” when talking on the mic during parties.

And before folks ever get down here, we get a lot of calls in the office from parents who want to know more before sending their kid off to spring break on “San Padre/San Pedro/South Padre/etc.”

Spring Break Party Contests

30 03 2009

I’d hoped to write a little something up regarding the various contests that go on during spring break, usually at the end of the night at a club.

But, they’re actually pretty self-explanatory. So, a list may suffice.

There are Wet-T shirt contests, which are sort of a staple. Prior to actually coming on spring break, I don’t think I understood how few of the T-shirts stay on. Probably this is because I’d grown up watching MTVs spring break specials–during which the shirts have to stay on.

There’s also the best thong contest. Most of the time, the thongs do actually stay on–though I have seen a stray girl enter the contest commando. But, it never goes well.

Sexy Dance contest…I’ve never seen two dudes in this one, just two ladies. I wonder if girls feel gypped with the lack of writhing men in most of the contests.

guys-dancing1

I also think there might be a Sex with Your Clothes On contest. But, this might actually be the same as the Sexy Dance contest–as they’re both just a bunch of wiggling around provacatively.

I’ve seen more than a few Girl Kissing Girl contests (again, no Guy Kissing Guy contests).

And Bikini contests, though these are usually limited to the daytime.

bikini-contest

These all tend to rule the clubs, though our party cruise is smaller and allows for smaller contests like the Clothing Exchange, Relays, and so on.

And there’s always the one on one games like Beer Pong, Bong Races, Keg Stands–though these tend to happen on the beach or at random.

Where the Locals Drink in South Padre

30 03 2009

A lot of what folks come on spring break for is to hit up the arena-style clubs they might not have at home. And the island has no shortage of them–Louie’s and Mooncusser’s (formerly Tequila Frogs) are particularly huge.

louies-31

The flipside, of course, is that with that many people–getting a drink isn’t always easy. And occasionally, you just want something more intimate. So, the favorite change of pace on South Padre is a little place way up at the north end of the island called the Coral Reef.

coral-reef-sign

There’s not much here that’ll surprise you. Not many spring breakers. Long lines for karaoke, but short lines at the bar. They don’t have ginger ale (but will mix Coke and Sprite together, if you’re desperate). And the bathrooms (the men’s at least) are covered with pictures of the an older man (the owner? I don’t know) groping the breasts of several exotic dancers.

I tried to find a website for them, to find a better picture–but all I could find on-line was an explanation for how their beer is so cold. Apparently they use this:

fro-star

It’s a pitcher with ice built into it! So the beer stays cold, without getting diluted!

Partying by Day in South Padre

29 03 2009

While there are several megaclubs on in South Padre, by far the largest venue on South Padre is Coca Cola Beach. It actually changes names depending on who sponsors it. So, folks tend to think of it as Coca Cola Beach even on the years when it’s been Full Throttle Beach or Sprite Remix Beach.

coca-cola-beach

Regardless, it’s located behind the ISLA GRAND BEACH RESORT–which has undergone a name change itself, since it was a Radisson last year. And its party stage attracts daily crowds between 12,000 and 18,000 at for games, drinking, a lot of banter about whose college is best, all competing with a 50,000 watt sound system.

Questions:

Q: Is airfare included in the $499 price?
A: No. You drive down (well, we have a party bus included for your transportation for Mazatlan, however)

Q: Does it matter how many people we have?
A: Sort of. We can still get you a $499/person trip with 2 people, but it would be for 4 nights instead of 7 to South Padre Island, Texas.

Q: Do I have to be 21 to go?
A: No, 18. All clubs on the Texas & Mazatlan trip are 18+

Q: Why is this spring break trip this cheap?
A: It’s a road trip. We are including a condo, meals, and parties. NO transportation (except Mazatlan from Texas or Arizona departure cities)

Q: Will there be alot of people on this trip?
A: THOUSANDS!!!!

Q: DO I have to pay for this trip all at once?
A: NO! We take a $150/down payment deposit per person (comes off the trip price) and you have 3 weeks to pay off the balance. Those terms are pretty easy to live with & afford as a college student.

South Padre Spring Break clubs & bars – described & broken down

22 11 2008

If you plan on going to South Padre Island, Texas this spring break season, chances are you are looking forward to seeing what the island has to offer in terms of nightlife.

I’ll break this down by the “major” spring break clubs to the other possibly fun bars to go to – South Padre does a pretty good job of covering most peoples’ tastes with clubs & bars.

we will provide a basic description, as well as the “pro’s” of the spring break parties there

A major thing to understand about Padre is that it does not offer super club, indoor feel nightclubs. It’s a nice change up from Acapulco if you’ve went there before – South Padre is a casual destination you can wear flip flops to the bars, and not wear pants or slacks as a guy – which we always thought was gay.

Major Spring Break Bars/Clubs Include:

*Louies Backyard
*Club Pelican West
*Tequila Frogs
*Chaos
*Skky Bar & Lounge

Fun Bars to go to

*Palm Street Pier
*Tequila Sunsets
*Amberjacks
*Wanna Wanna Beach Bar
*Jakes

*Louies Backyard

Fun Bars to go to

*Palm Street Pier

-EXCELLENT FRESH seafood & steak – go big when you order
-Really nice inside, but not stuffy

What we love about Saida Towers in South Padre Island during spring break

18 11 2008

One great reason to book your spring break trip to South Padre with Inertia Tours is that we have such a phenomenal & huge block of condos at Saida Towers. There are alot of “me-too” websites in this world, but ONLY Inertia guarantees you stay at Saida if you book it – no “bumpings” or “like kind” exchanges on Saida at the last minute. Not just this ….where are their videos? Where are their pictures? Saida is clearly demonstrated as Inertia’s headquarters party property – not Mister Rogers Tours.

Here’s a little video we did of the pool at Saida:

Why We Love Saida:

*That video shows one of the best reason to select Saida for your stay – 2 beachfront (and did we mention…HEATED) pools and two hot tubs you can see the waves from while you sip your cold brews.

* Great location – right on the beach, yet 5-6 blocks to the entertainment district. You can walk to the action if you stay here.

Need to see a map of what this might look like:
http://www.inertiatours.com/southpadreisland/map.php

*We love the view of the ocean from the Saida Units!
Here’s a video from the Balcony of Tower III where we have a ton of condos!

*Saida also has tremendous before & after parties during spring break – a big benefit to meeting other party people when you are on spring break

*Saida is located adjacent to the Full Throttle Beach & Entertainment stage during the day – where everyone parties during the day with kegs & ENORMOUS beer bongs

Here is a good video of the dance contest at the Full Throttle Beach stage they do everyday of spring break:

*The condos are “bad ass” nice inside – you get a full sized kitchen with a full sized fridge for your cold ones, and a big dining room table for beer pong, as well as multiple bathrooms (girls, think about getting ready – you need a few bathrooms or it will take hours upon hours!)

Here’s a great video of one of Inertia Tours 2 bedroom condos in South Padre at Saida:

*Saida Towers is also a “Cowboy Cadillac” in that it is surprisingly inexpensive – you can book this condo with your friends “almost all inclusive” with Inertia in that this package will have the condo, 2 dine around restaurant meals & more priced between $350 and $499 per person out the door!

*Saida represents accommodations that would be like you booking the Presidential Suite at a 4 star hotel – except that every single condo is that big & nice, and you don’t have to be the President to stay there.

*My favorite….Bens Liquor Warehouse is in the strip mall right in front of Saida Towers – you literally have to walk under 100 yards to get more hooch!

If you have any questions about Saida Towers, South Padre Island, or a great spring break trip – give us a chance at Inertia Tours to earn your business!
